The Secret Diet of Outdoor Cats: A Bug's Life?
Let's delve into the intriguing world of feral felines and their dietary habits. As a biologist with a keen interest in invasive species, I've spent years uncovering the mysteries of what these outdoor cats consume. It's no secret that free-ranging cats feast on birds and rodents, but their penchant for insects is a lesser-known fact that deserves attention.
The Invasive Hunter
Felis catus, our domesticated companion, transforms into an invasive predator when roaming free. This species has colonized every ecosystem except Antarctica, and its dietary choices have global implications. My colleagues and I embarked on a mission to identify the full spectrum of their prey, especially those that are endangered or threatened.
We scoured the vast literature, from peer-reviewed articles to agency reports, using every tool at our disposal, including Google Scholar and Web of Science. This exhaustive search led us to a staggering number of publications—533 to be precise—revealing a diverse menu of nearly 2,100 animal species on the feline menu.
The Insect Connection
Among these species, a surprising 7% are insects and other invertebrates. This finding is particularly intriguing because it challenges the conventional image of cats as solely bird and mouse hunters. Beetles, crustaceans, and even the occasional arachnid make up a significant part of their diet.
The impact of this insect consumption is twofold. Firstly, it highlights the adaptability of cats as predators, showcasing their willingness to exploit a wide range of food sources. Secondly, it raises concerns about the potential threat to invertebrate populations, especially those already vulnerable due to various environmental pressures.
Identifying the Unidentified
A frustrating aspect of our research was the lack of specificity in many studies. While they confirmed the presence of invertebrates in cat diets, identifying the exact species was often a challenge. Out of the 533 studies, only a third provided detailed information on invertebrate species, allowing us to identify 148 unique species.
Among these identified invertebrates, we discovered several that are listed as endangered or vulnerable, such as the Aldabran grasshopper and the Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish. This is a critical finding, as it suggests that cats may be contributing to the decline of these already threatened species.
The Protein Puzzle
Cats, being obligate carnivores, require a substantial amount of protein, which invertebrates can provide. This dietary need could drive cats to actively seek out these tiny creatures, even in urban environments where they might seem less abundant. The entertainment factor of chasing and catching insects cannot be overlooked, as it may contribute to this behavior even when nutritional needs are met.
Researching this aspect of cat behavior is challenging due to the small size and soft bodies of invertebrates, which make field observations and scat analysis difficult. However, emerging molecular technologies offer a glimmer of hope. By analyzing trace DNA in cat stomach contents and scat, we can gain a more detailed understanding of their insectivorous habits.
Implications and Future Insights
The impact of cats on invertebrate populations is likely site-specific and dependent on the availability of other food sources. While cats may not be the primary driver of invertebrate decline, they could be significant contributors in certain ecosystems. The fact that many invertebrates are in global decline due to urbanization and pollution makes this an even more pressing issue.
